Griffin Class

Welcome to Griffin class. Our classroom is a dynamic environment where we are all keen to learn, investigate and follow our dreams, in a friendly and inspirational setting. The Year 6 children are kind and supportive towards the Y5 children, helping them to settle and learn new routines at the beginning of the school year. In Upper Key Stage two the children are expected to be responsible and independent. They also set a good example for younger members of our school community, including operating a buddy system with our Foundation Stage pupils, and acting as Ambassadors by taking responsibility for a variety of tasks throughout the school.

The children work hard in lessons and are expected to do their best. They are both supported and challenged through whole class and group activities. Pupils work at appropriate levels in ability groups for English and Mathematics, sometimes working with a partner, or within a small group. Work is differentiated in core subjects to cater for the ability range within the class. Additionally, targeted intervention activities ensure that individual needs are met when certain children may need to receive extra support.

Each term there is a creative curriculum topic which incorporates English, History, Geography, Science and Art.   The children generate questions for each new topic as a starting point. Quality reading texts are linked to each topic and work is carefully planned to meet key learning objectives. The children really enjoy our topics which cover a wide range of interests including space exploration, Tudors, World War Two, the Ancient Greeks, Water Worlds, Lights, Camera, Action and a topic all about Italy.

In addition the class has weekly music lessons which incorporate basic music theory as well as performance skills. Pieces of music are selected to develop progressive musical skills and often link to the topic being studied. The children have a carpeted library within the classroom. We have a classroom suite of computers which are used alongside our interactive whiteboard daily, plus a range of other equipment which enhance the learning environment such as microphones to record debates or to collect data for example.

We have a residential trip every other year, which is always a great success and enjoyed by children and staff alike, in a supportive environment. Children are given the opportunity to attempt tasks they might not ordinarily try such as abseiling! Year 5 annually take part in a singing concert which is formed by all of the Year fives in the local area and also annually take part in first aid training at our local hospital. We also organise trips linked to our topic work and in the past these have been to Sulgrave Manor (Tudors), The National Space Centre (Space exploration) and The Imperial War Museum (World War Two) to name but a few.

We have excellent links with secondary schools in the area and pride ourselves on preparing children for their next steps. Our classroom is a secure, happy and fun place to be. The children enjoy coming to school and are keen to develop friendships and take on new learning challenges.
